At the weekend, we enjoyed our first ever visit to Audley End House in Saffron Walden, Essex. An imposing Jacobean English Heritage property.

We loved the dramatic entrance – seeing the house between the trees as we crossed the bridge over the river and headed up the winding drive. The car park is around the side of the property, meaning you drive right up to the front door. Just for a moment you’re allowed to think you’re arriving ‘home’!

It had a really magical feeling and the grounds were immaculate.

We had been invited to a photography excursion by CEWE Photoworld in collaboration with English Heritage. We, along with six other families, were given a guided tour around the property and gardens. We were encouraged to capture photos of the day to publish and print the series in a CEWE photobook.

It was refreshing to visit a property where children were encouraged to explore and play.

I’m confident Stanley’s highlight was the authentic children’s nursery – he remarked how the rocking horse which he rode, albeit briefly, had hair like mummy!

The working horses were a lovely attraction, along with the actors who were in character. And, of course, no child can resist an adventure playground.

Bobby and I particularly enjoyed the tour of the organic kitchen garden (and flowers in the conservatory). Despite spending four hours at the house, we certainly felt there was more to see and explore. We’d love to go back and try more of the food.

I really would recommend Audley End to families – there genuinely is something for all ages.

Stanley was asleep before we even reached the gates. A pretty good indication what a good day he’d had.
